If you are currently rocking an Android device, you should be incredibly happy with your choice, because what I am about to show you is fundamentally impossible on an Apple iPhone.
I actually carry two phones. I use an Android device as my primary daily driver, but I also keep an iPhone handy simply because colleagues rely on iMessage and AirDrop for work. However, when it comes to raw productivity and system architecture, Android is playing an entirely different game.
Today, I am going to show you how to turn your phone’s interface into a fully functional, desktop-style multitasking environment.
Beyond Basic Picture-in-Picture
If you open a video application like YouTube, HBO Max, or Hulu, you already know that you can simply press the home button to push the video into a small floating window. This native “picture-in-picture” mode lets you resize the video and push it to the side of your screen so it stays out of the way while you text or browse.
But here is the secret: you can do this with almost any app on your device, not just video players.
The Power of “Pop-Up View”
Android allows you to force standard applications—like your Chrome browser, your Notes app, or even your banking app—into free-floating, resizable windows.
Here is exactly how you activate it:
Open the application you want to use (like Google Chrome) and tap your multitasking button to view your recent apps.
Tap directly on the app’s icon or header at the top of its preview card.
Select Open in pop-up view from the drop-down menu.
Instantly, the application detaches from the background and becomes a floating window. You can grab the top header to drag it anywhere on your screen, and it will continuously float on top of whatever else you are doing.
Desktop Mechanics on a Mobile Screen
Once an app is in Pop-up view, it behaves exactly like a software window on a Windows PC or Mac.
Dynamic Resizing: You can grab the corner of the floating window and drag it to resize the application to your exact liking. The Android interface is incredibly intelligent and will completely and dynamically reflow the app’s layout to match the new custom dimensions you chose.
Simultaneous Execution: You can actively run multiple pop-up windows simultaneously. You can have two different applications open in floating windows right next to each other, fully replicating a desktop multitasking experience on a mobile screen. If you really wanted to push your processor, you could even play two different videos at the exact same time.
Minimizing to Bubbles: If the screen gets too cluttered, you can minimize these pop-up windows. They shrink down into tiny floating app icons (or “bubbles”) that you can push to the edge of the screen. Tapping the bubble instantly restores the window to its previous size. When you are done, just hit the maximize button to snap the app back into a standard, full-screen mode.
The Ultimate Flex: Samsung DeX
If you want to take this architectural freedom to its absolute limit, Samsung devices offer a feature called DeX.
Samsung DeX allows your smartphone to act as a complete, functional desktop PC replacement. If you plug your phone into a standard computer monitor using a USB-C to HDMI adapter, the phone projects a full desktop interface. You get a taskbar, desktop icons, and the ability to plug in a physical mouse and keyboard to drag your windows around on the big screen.
